Bluetooth IoT Applications: From BLE to Mesh

Bluetooth has come a very long way since Jaap Haartsen, an electrical engineer, invented the technology in 1994 while working for Ericsson in Lund, Sweden. He envisioned the technology as an alternative to the RS-232 data cables that since the 1960s had been the standard for connecting computer peripherals to PCs. Haartsen disrupted that standard by using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band from 2.4 to 2.485 GHz to send small and simple data packets (“messages”) over short distances of a few meters. In 1998, Haartsen played a key role in creating the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG)—a standards-setting body like 3GPP and LoRa Alliance. The group has since taken on a life of its own as we’ve embedded Bluetooth technology into our everyday routines worldwide. Bluetooth will only continue to become more important as the SIG refines its industrial offerings: Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) and Bluetooth mesh (more on those shortly).
